Height chart: cm to feet and inches (and back)

· 3 min read

Heights are given in centimetres in most of the world and in feet and inches in the United States and the United Kingdom. This chart converts the most common heights both ways, and the formula below works for any height.

cm to feet and inches

  • 150 cm = 4′ 11″ · 155 cm = 5′ 1″ · 160 cm = 5′ 3″
  • 165 cm = 5′ 5″ · 170 cm = 5′ 7″ · 175 cm = 5′ 9″
  • 180 cm = 5′ 11″ · 185 cm = 6′ 1″ · 190 cm = 6′ 3″
  • 195 cm = 6′ 5″ · 200 cm = 6′ 7″

Feet and inches to cm

  • 5′ 0″ = 152.4 cm · 5′ 2″ = 157.5 cm · 5′ 4″ = 162.6 cm
  • 5′ 6″ = 167.6 cm · 5′ 8″ = 172.7 cm · 5′ 10″ = 177.8 cm
  • 6′ 0″ = 182.9 cm · 6′ 2″ = 188.0 cm · 6′ 4″ = 193.0 cm

The formula

One inch is exactly 2.54 cm and one foot is 12 inches (30.48 cm). To convert cm to feet and inches, divide by 2.54 to get inches, then divide by 12: the whole number is feet and the remainder is inches. For example, 172 cm ÷ 2.54 = 67.7 in = 5 ft 7.7 in, which is usually written 5′ 8″.

To convert back, multiply the feet by 12, add the inches and multiply by 2.54. For example, 5′ 9″ = 69 in × 2.54 = 175.3 cm.

Height in metres

In many countries height is written in metres: 1.70 m is 170 cm, and 1.75 m is 175 cm. Move the decimal point two places to switch between metres and centimetres.

Why converted heights don’t always match

Heights in feet are usually rounded to the nearest inch, and an inch is 2.54 cm, so two people listed at 5′ 9″ can differ by up to 2.5 cm. For an exact answer, use the height converter, which shows the result to a tenth of a centimetre or inch.
