What BMI tells you

BMI is weight in kilograms divided by height in metres squared. The World Health Organization classifies adult BMI as underweight below 18.5, healthy from 18.5 to 24.9, overweight from 25 to 29.9 and obesity from 30.

Because it only uses height and weight, BMI is a quick screening number rather than a diagnosis. Very muscular people can have a high BMI without excess fat, and some health guidelines use lower thresholds for people of Asian descent.
